Massage chair problems: what breaks, who fixes it
We logged 94 known issues across 15 chairs, and the shape of them is not what the category’s reputation suggests. Very little of it is mechanisms failing. Almost all of it is what happens next: who pays the freight, whether a technician exists, and whether the document covers the chair you bought.
Document research by the Comfort District research desk. Updated August 20, 2026.
How we level an issue
Three levels, and the label is on every entry so you can weigh it yourself. A documented issue rests on a manufacturer’s own text, a service bulletin, an official notice or strong multi-source corroboration. A recurring complaint is repeated independently by multiple owners. An isolated report is one or a few credible accounts and is labelled as such rather than inflated.
- Documented
- 48
- Recurring owner complaint
- 29
- Isolated report
- 17
That ratio is the finding. 48 of 94 rest on a document rather than on someone’s account, which is unusual for this category and only possible because the documents are where we started.

What the grades say
We grade warranty, serviceability and parts availability on every chair. 6 of 15 warranties graded Poor, 7 of 15 serviceability, and 6 of 12 on parts. Those are not failure rates and they are not predictions. They are what the paperwork grants before anything goes wrong.
The chairs whose service terms held up
3 of the 15 document service terms strong enough to lead with, and all 3 carry our Buy. Each one names who turns up, who pays the freight and what voids the cover, which is the whole subject of this page.
Costway Relaxation 09Remote diagnosis, then an authorised provider repairs the chair where it sits, for three flat years, with parts freight paid. Where no provider covers an area, an owner may hire a technician and be reimbursed. See price at Amazon
Kahuna LM-6800TTwo full years of parts, labour and on-site service, plus a parts store that still stocks boards, motors and pumps for a chair the maker no longer sells. Register within 30 days and buy from an authorised seller. See price at Amazon
Luraco i9 Max PlusThe longest warranty structure we have read on any massage chair, from a factory in Texas that answers its own phone. In-home labour does not reach Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and coverage does not survive a move or a resale. See price at Amazon
What to ask before you buy
Four questions settle most of this, and every one has a document behind it. Does the warranty name your model, or a list your model is not on. Does a claim send a technician or send the chair, and who pays freight in each direction. Can you buy a part without telephoning anyone. And is the coverage still valid given where you bought it, because several instruments exclude marketplace and unauthorized-dealer purchases outright.
Get the answers in writing. Marketing pages and warranty instruments disagreed on one of these four points on most chairs we read.
Service questions, answered once
What goes wrong with massage chairs?
We do not have a failure-rate table and nobody honest does, because the manufacturers do not publish one. What we can report is what is documented: across 15 chairs we logged 94 known issues, of which 48 are documented rather than anecdotal. The pattern is overwhelmingly about service and paperwork rather than about mechanisms breaking.
Do massage chair warranties cover labour?
Often for one year and rarely beyond it. Of the 15 instruments we read, 6 graded Poor on our scale, most commonly because the headline term covers parts while labour expires at month twelve. Several exclude shipping in the same document that promises free parts.
Can you buy replacement parts for a massage chair?
Usually not from the maker. We graded parts availability on 12 chairs and 6 came out Poor, meaning no catalogue, no part numbers, no prices and no way to order a component without telephoning warranty service.
Which massage chair brands send a technician to your home?
One of the fifteen documents in-home repair as the default rather than as a conditional first year, and it also allows an owner to hire a technician and be reimbursed where no provider covers the area. Most route a claim through a return authorization and a shipment, on a chair that boxes above two hundred pounds.
